Growing up in Southern California, the beach was an integral part of our summer, and playing in the ocean always involved encountering kelp of various kinds. Long tendrils intertwined with limbs in the surf and became forests surrounding sand castles, and we enjoyed running our fingers along every nook and cranny of the watery leaves. We imagined the long strands as remnants retrieved from a mermaid’s garden beneath the waves.
This delight that my kids had in discovering seaweed washed ashore this summer brought to mind these similar memories from my own childhood. The seaweed portraits in my Ocean Treasures collection seek to express the wonder that we had at this ocean foliage, so ordinary and yet so strange. In these pieces, mica particles in the deep blue watercolor and metallic gold accents cause the entire paintings to shimmer in the light, emulating the effect of seawater glistening in the sun.
