“Art is important. We tend to think that it is a luxury, but it gives people deep pleasure because beauty is the personification of hope that something grander is at work.”

Meet Heather

Heather Kiser is a self-taught painter and mixed media artist who currently lives in Charlottesville, Virginia with her husband and three young children. A Southern California native, she moved to Charlottesville for graduate school and received her PhD in English Literature from the University of Virginia in 2015. Heather’s life-long enthusiasm for art was deepened while working on her dissertation, which explores the idea of the woman artist in Victorian poetry and in the work of early women photographers. A latent desire to create art eventually culminated when Heather decided to leave academia following the birth of her first daughter. At a crossroads personally and professionally, Heather realized that she most aspired to become an artist herself rather than to write about the work of others.

Heather's current artistic practice is woven into the margins of her life as a stay-at-home mother, and she paints whenever and wherever she has the opportunity. Creating in this way has honed her observation skills and engendered an appreciation for the beauty of elements of everyday life that are often overlooked.

Inspired by her academic background, her role as a mother, her surroundings, and her faith, Heather’s work draws attention to the emotional resonance of her subjects through her emphasis on texture and use of impressionistic color and mark-making. Watercolor and acrylic painting form the foundation of her practice, but she also enjoys reimagining traditional art processes digitally and combining different materials like ink, embroidery, gilding, and pressed florals with paint in unexpected ways. Heather’s highest goal is for viewers of her art to more clearly see the complex beauty inherent in the everyday world, and in so doing, to experience hope and joy.

When she’s not painting, Heather can be found exasperating her children by stopping to take yet another reference photo, listening to the latest psychological thriller while on a run, baking a sweet treat, or adding a few more stitches to her current embroidery project.

These principles are the heart of my artistic philosophy:

The ever-changing natural world is a well of inspiration.

From the lush Southern flora of the Blue Ridge Mountains where I now reside to the citrus-scented Pacific coast of my memories, my past and present surroundings continually stimulate my creative practice. My art expresses my abiding wonder at the richness of this world and the gratitude that I feel in response.

Layers of meaning surround each of us.

A glimpse of a rainbow, a child’s hug, sharing laughter with friends, the refreshment of an icy lemonade on a hot summer day–these little moments are as significant to our lives over time as grand milestones. Revelations of the glorious in the mundane endlessly fascinate me, and my work celebrates the value of these everyday delights.

Joy is always an excellent investment.

My art practice is a mediation on the light and grace in our world offered by an infinitely imaginative Creator. As an artist, my highest calling is to invite my collectors to feel that same deep sense of connection, renewal, and inspiration for years to come.

"You too have come into the world to do this, to go easy, to be filled with light, and to shine."

Mary Oliver, "When I Am Among the Trees"
